Lora defenders launched archer attacks from its walls, and Maksag had his soldiers create large wooden shields that would protect those working underneath. Still, construction proceeded slowly and several times the tower closest to the bridge would successfully destroy some of the work by throwing large stones and burning barrels at it. But even as the work was finished, the bridge was too dangerous a causeway. Or's famous trebuchets were also not reaching over western walls of the city.
