Gaskal /gæs'kæl/ (Bukkean: Goskol) is a city in Manteria. With its uninterrupted history spanning two millennia, it's one of the most ancient cities on the Continent. It was the capital of the ancient empire of Toor, then an individual city state, eventually becoming part of Mantareia.
Although located in Ydoh Rol, it is not considered part of Ydoh Rol. The city is connected to the outside world through the only road, known as Balae Moost. Travelers to and out of Gaskal are not allowed to leave the road, as entry into Ydoh Rol is strictly forbidden and enforced.
Etymology
Gaskal is Bukkean for "morning bird". At the time it was a widely shared reference to the Gyltoh stron (Morning song) from the Great Lore, two lines of which read:
Goskol, goskol, aa vilt datmaas baroh
Mulboh taver ayv y hlevenoh tolkoh!
Morning bird, morning bird, high sky belongs to you
I try to reach you with my hands, but you are way too high!
The phrase is used to refer to someone who wakes up early and works hard. As the frantic construction of the new capital would not stop even during the night, the rhyme became associated with the city itself.
