Kievan /'kiːvən/ was a superhero warrior and a Xaewoon religious figure who lived in the 16th and 17th CSR in Heran. He founded and led the Toor of Darkan and was central to many events of the 16th century. His participation in the 17th century had somewhat diminished, and he largely disappeared from the public eye by the 1650s.
Earliest records
First records that mention Kievan refer to several weapon orders received at Hanta, Commonground. Several longswords were requested, characterized not so much by the length of the blade, but by the length of the grip, probably for two-handed use. This type of weapon was not very common at the time, which is probably why records of the order were preserved, as something slightly unusual.
Role in the unification of the clans
The next decade saw Kievan unite a number of peoples under the flag of Darkan, a young warlord of one of the Kippie tribes.
Kievan's modus operandi was later dubbed as "beheading the clans". It involved him approaching a clan and adding the clan leader to his entourage, for the purpose of going on spiritual missions, meanwhile installing Darkan as a "temporary ruler".
Thus, Kievan would travel with an entourage that consisted almost exclusively of heads of various clans. He also began to be known as the Prince of Dusk, since it was customary for him and his entourage to show up late in the evening.
Darkan was disliked, but Kievan's support allowed him to stay in power for decades, to the extent that the Toor of Darkan was mostly known as the Toor of Kievan.
Kievan's role in building the Toor of Darkan is disputed by some researchers and religious leaders, who cite a lack of direct evidence. For instance, there are no accounts of Darkan and Kievan even having been seen together, let alone having a close enough relationship that Kievan would support Darkan's ascension to power. Others point out that legendaries tend to act in mysterious ways and that Kievan was rarely seen in general. Some clan leaders who have gone on missions with Kievan have also cited his support for Darkan. And regardless of whether Kievan knew Darkan personally or not, his consistent suggestions of installing Darkan as a "temporary ruler" had, in fact, lent enormous support to Darkan's ascent to power.
Rivalry with Goldoor
Kievan was in the state of rivalry with Darfe Goldoor, and it is suggested that it was Kievan who had first informed Nilma Oordar that the nomads raiding Qep were Goldoor's army, and then repeatedly informed Nilma about Goldoor's whereabouts, which allowed Qep to eventually defeat Goldoor in the 1549-1550 campaign.
Some religious leaders suggest that the conflict was between the toors and perhaps between Darkan and Goldoor, as Xaewoon preachers paint Kievan as a more otherworldly character, but available data and accounts of those in Kievan's entourage reveal that it seemed to have been a deeply personal feud.
As a religious icon
Kievan was arguably the last significant figure to represent Mōroh. His was of a light green persuasion and taught a doctrine of a single Mamkoon, a land where all the believers had to travel to.
Throughout his life, Kievan went on the so-called "missions" which were to provide clues to finding Kasanja, the visionary who would lead the people to Mamkoon. It is these missions that the various heads of clans were so eager to join, since it was believed that traveling alongside Kievan was walking one's right path, the Xaewoon, and was a sign that a person is Trenona, a person of the path. Not only did it advance one's spiritual quest, it also strengthened one's political standing.
According to Davi the Heranian, Nilma Oordar, who was a blue stron believer, nevertheless held Kievan in high regard.
Role in other significant events
Kievan's name is tightly connected with Sint, although his role there is unclear. One of the horsemen on the walls of Bele is denoted as "that Kievan" by a sign below.
Kievan removed Lotyfa from Dyfy Toarlameek and was instrumental in introducing her to Moon King V.
Appearance
Kievan was thin, but not tall. He had dark skin and it was hypothesized that he was originally from Teamatian. He frequently wore white robes and a uniquely winded turban. Some reports indicate that he had long hair that he wore in a long braid.
