The crossing of Ouna. Barbek.

New Dawn is a name given to a major wave of migration from Central Dantria that took people from the town of Purtule across the Ouna desert to the Duls Settlements and then further to the east in the second half of the second revolution.

It is contrasted with the Dawn, a mass migration to the east that occurred in the middle of the first revolution. The peoples of Gantolia, Yammoe and Tarnaria are the descendants of the Dawn.

New Dawn begins at around 15th CSR.

Reasons for migration

The decline of Central Dantria and its rising rivalry with the economically successful Western Dantria and Wunnah led its government to consider expansion. General Panoe was tasked with conquering Leykarya. This was an unrealistic project, but it was used by King N IV as a way to raise money and increase morale of the population. The project failed, since Leykarya was connected to the Continent by an isthmus that was fairly easy for them to defend. General Panoe realized that there is no easy way back through the Ouna. Duls Settlements were established, so that people could stay, while small portions of them attempted to cross back. There was not enough resources to go back and many people were stuck.

Both the campaign and the returning parties made it known that Ouna is crossable, albeit at great cost. This led to a number of people, including families of those who got stuck on the other side, to attempt the Ouna crossing.

Route

The New Dawn route started at the Central Dantrian town of Purtule and went east to Tuntan, then from Tuntan turned north to the Duls Settlements.

The estimated length of the route is at 2300 km. But the reason for the Tuntan detour was to avoid the sand dunes at the north west part of Ouna, as well as be able to recuperate at Tuntan before embarking on the second leg of the journey.

New Dawn route from Purtule to Duls Settlements

Nevertheless, the route was dangerous and many people have perished on their way to Tuntan or on their way to Duls. One also had to have enough money to be able to stay at Tuntan. Poorer travelers would set up camp outside of the oasis and instead venture inside only to buy the most basic food and water supplies and spend an hour or two in the shade.

Duls Settlements

Main article: Duls Settlements

Duls Settlements would be the next stop for a New Dawn migrant. Featuring a hot semi-arid climate, Duls was a more forgiving region, but still very challenging. Frequently people would either build or occupy previously abandoned housing and spend the season, eventually moving along the desert border to the east, until they would reach Barzo.

Colonization of the northern Continent

Migrants from the New Dawn began colonizing sparsely inhabited regions, adjacent to Duls. However, their settlements began to suffer from regular raids of Teamatian chiefdoms and their progress deeper into the eastern part of the Continent was temporarily prevented by the Great Turtle. It was later discovered that Yammoe used its secret representatives to manufacture a conflict between the New Dawn settlers and the Great Turtle, meanwhile uniting the previously scattered tribes into a single force under Daur Megeg, a chief of one of the larger tribes. This led to the beginning of the Great Turtle war that lasted for about a century and became the primary reason for the formation of the confederation of Darda, the goal of which was to defend and facilitate the colonization of the east.

The Great Turtle was partially defeated and partially dispersed through the Homestead when the state of Kartas struck a close relationship with Osa Nara. This allowed Darda to gain an important ally in its indirect war with Yammoe, that meanwhile used its covert operative group Puhntuss to create a puppet state called Xornerian in order to increase its foothold in the region. Puhntuss then instigated a number of conflicts in the region in order to keep the powers divided and busy.

Darda's and Yammoe rivalry went on for the next three centuries, during which Osa Nara and Xornerian fell to the Kareden who established the Kingdom of Mamkoon. The Kingdom increasingly fell under Yammoe's influence, but was then defeated when attacked from three sides by Loodon Empire, Leykarya and the Overpol Expanse, ending Yammoe's control of the region.

Darda was disestablished circa 1920s SR due to the secesion of Kartas and the war between Future and Wewen. The New Dawn is largely considered to have ended by about this time as well.
